Overview
In outer space, cables are presented with challenging environmental conditions that could impact their performance — possibly having drastic consequences on the mission of the spacecraft.
GORE Space Cables, Type CSWL are constructed with robust materials that are chemical- and temperature-resistant to withstand the harsh conditions of space travel. Additionally, our cables are engineered with a fluoropolymer insulation that reduces the risk of cut-through and material creep.
The cables’ smaller diameter and added durability increase flexibility with a tighter bend radius and extremely low spring-back — making it easier to route the cables through confined areas during installation.
Our cables are well-suited for use in all areas of the spacecraft — from propulsion to optical systems — and meet the rigorous requirements of ESCC 3901/024.
The Science Behind the Cables
The key to our space cables’ performance is the proprietary material used in their insulation, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). This specialized insulation increases the cable’s ability to bend and flex, while protecting the conductors from stress and damage. The ePTFE material also eliminates the need to trim frayed insulation, and its specialized construction reduces the overall cable diameter so it fits in the tightest enclosures.
Applications
GORE Space Cables, Type CSWL are frequently used for:
- manned/unmanned space missions
- low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites
- transfer vehicles
- launchers
Notably, the cables have been used aboard the Vega Launcher.
